For this installment of “Timberwolves Video of the Week” I was looking for a YouTube clip that had Malik Sealy’s jersey retirement ceremony in its entirety but had no such luck. However, I did come across this well done collection of career highlights and then a very well put together ending from the 2:47 mark and beyond – which includes showing Malik’s jersey in the rafters of Target Center.
While searching for the right video for this I came across a few facts and figures that I had forgotten about regarding Sealy’s basketball career. I would have never remembered that he played for three teams before joining the Wolves (Pacers, Clippers, and Pistons). I forgot that he stayed in college for all four years (St. John’s). Finally, in case you missed it, Malik had a role in the movie Eddie.
One of the most memorable moments of Malik on the basketball court is portrayed very nicely in this video. After hitting the game winning shot – banking a 3 at the buzzer against the team that drafted him (Indiana) – you can see the sheer enjoyment from Malik as he hits the floor and flails his arms and legs. In one word: phenomenal.
Under the video there is a really nice summary of Malik’s career. He had a few really solid years playing for the Clippers, got lost for one season in Detroit, and then became a very nice compliment to the Twolves roster. The Twolves were really moving forward in the ’99-’00 season with their first 50 win season in franchise history.
Unfortunately, that was Malik’s last season, as he was killed by a drunk driver on May 20th, 2000. At the start of the following season, the franchise put his name and jersey in the rafters. Malik Sealy’s #2 jersey remains the only number retired by the franchise. Someday, in the not too distant future, he’ll be joined in those rafters by one of his best friends, KG.
Rest In Peace Malik
